The person who drew this and posted the tutorial also commented that she is “not a math person.” I beg to differ. Compass-and-straightedge constructions and the pythagorean theorem might be high school geometry, but identifying appropriate applications for them in daily life (here, designing a quilt block) requires more than just a little mathematical insight.
Women, please stop perpetuating the “I’m so bad at math” stereotype and give yourselves some credit.
open hussif (by Devon)
I made a hussif (or housewife) for my sister-in-law for Christmas. It’s an 18th & 19th century sewing kit. I wet felted the needle pages and needle felted the pin cushion. There are two pockets for thread, buttons, and miscellaneous.
Yesterday, I finished a mini quilt with a traditional Amish Star block. For the hand-quilting, I made a ghetto thimble out of duct tape. I wish I had real duct tape, though, because the dollar store stuff that I had was all gooey and more like electrical tape.
I made this for a swap, and I’m going to miss it.
Looks like I started a proper blog. Sigh. I had fun geeking out today designing a quilt and documented some of the process here.
Doll Quilt ‘10 (via devaburger)
I made a quilt! This is my first quilted (as in real) quilt ever. I made one paper pieced square from scraps, figured it would be a long time before I made another, and turned it into a doll quilt.
The grey fabric in the center is from an old, loved pair of pants. I bought the other two center fabrics on my honeymoon. The yellow is from a thrift store and is very, very heavy.
hand-made napkin (via devaburger)
I made a cloth napkin today! I realized I had a pretty nice collection of cloth napkins that I wasn’t using, and I wanted to rectify that. If I make it, I’m more likely to use it.
The cloth is a handspun with red and green threads (couldn’t tell you warp v. weft), and it looks like a shimmery brown from a distance. Yay for remnant bins!
I hand sewed it with some hand quilting thread. I used a tutorial to get mitered corners and another tutorial to learn how to fold a napkin all fancy-like. I’m happy with it.
